Somali donkeys are nomadic, living in small groups of around ten females with their young. Males are territorial. They defend their territories in battle, marking them with piles of dung. The more attractive their plot is (abundant food and water), the longer the females will stay there, increasing the chances of survival of their future foal, and the chances of reproduction of the male owner. In uninteresting territories, the stallion may find himself alone or in a group of single males, called bachelors.
