African Spurred Tortoise Centrochelys sulcata

Weighing up to 100 kg, the African Spurred Tortoise is Africa’s largest tortoise. It roams across Sahelian savannahs searching for food which is scarce in this arid environment. At the height of the dry season, it estivates and digs a 3 to 4 meters deep burrow where it will stay until the rain season returns. Sometimes, it also uses these burrows to keep warm during the coolest nights.
