Spotted hyena

Hyenas live in packs of up to 80 individuals, but these packs are always led by females: it’s a matriarchal society. Even the lowest-ranking female in the hierarchy remains dominant over all the males! Hierarchical status is passed down from mother to daughter: the dominant female will therefore give birth to the future matriarch. Males remain on the outskirts of the group and have a harder time accessing food.
