Lilac-breasted Roller

Rolliers are carnivorous and consume various prey: locusts, beetles, small vertebrates (lizards, scorpions, passerines, etc.). They hunt from a high vantage point (tree, rock…). Once the prey is spotted on the ground, the bird melts on it. A small prey will be swallowed on the spot. A too large prey will be taken on a perch and struck until dismembered. Territorial, Lilac-breasted Roller regularly conducts surveillance flights around the nest. He does not hesitate to chase the intruders with plucking and hoarse and loud cries.
