Native to the United States, the Red-headed turtle is a freshwater turtle. Imported massively by pet shops in the 80s, they have unfortunately been very often released into the wild by owners who no longer wanted to take care of them. Today classified as an invasive species, it threatens the fauna and flora of our French waterways, in particular our local turtles such as the European Pond Terrapin. Some parks, such as the Réserve Africaine de Sigean, have set up reception basins for Red-eared tortoises abandoned by their owners in order to avoid finding them in the wild.
