The red river hog is recognizable by its “red” coat and its pointed ears ending in a brush of hair. It lives in groups in the humid forests and the swamps that border them, spending its days in wallows whose mud cools it and protects it from insect bites. It is active at dusk to find its food, using its snout to detect and then dig up tubers and roots. Opportunistic, it sometimes feeds in the fields where it causes damage that angers farmers.
