The massive Western gabonese viper is nocturnal. Its rather slow locomotion and ground-carpet color make it a good hunter on the prowl. Perfectly camouflaged on the ground, it waits for prey to pass within range of its fangs before biting it. The venom kills it quickly and even helps to break down its tissues.
